Nothing New

After last week’s post, it hit me that there is nothing new under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 1:9&10,  1st Corinthians 10:13)

There I was, sitting at my desk, clucking away at the keyboard, pouring my heart out and letting my mind periodically jump in as I shared part of what made me go on hiatus from the blog for a few months. For sure I thought that I was just explaining myself; trying to be accountable. I did not expect that anyone would relate to anything I said because I’m mostly a weirdo who tends to get lost in her thoughts. Thank God that the renewal of my mind is through The Word because then I really can’t get lost in my mind if I have the mind of Christ. (Romans 12:2, 1st Corinthians 2:16)

After the post went up, I got an overwhelming number of people sharing that they have been going through the same/ something similar. I was many things and one of those was surprised. Then slowly it dawned on me, that there is nothing new under the sun.

We often feel like we are going through something alone. We often believe that we are the first to experience certain things and that no one would understand if we let them walk with us in those moments. We are afraid to share our ‘shallowness’ with brethren because it will dilute their ‘depth.’ We are weary of wearing our real faces lest there be no smile and lest others question whether we know that the joy of the Lord is our strength. It tends to feel like we’re inside the body yet outside of it somehow; like you’re that weak strand of hair about to break off and the rest of the body is oblivious. In these moments, we want to cling onto the fact that we’re unique in our challenges or suffering. So how dare you tell us that there is nothing new under the sun? How dare you liken the weight of our situation to any other? How dare you claim that there is anyone who can understand (even remotely) where we are?

Yet even in these moments, the truth remains: there is nothing new under the sun. We can choose to take comfort in that: we aren’t alone, we aren’t the pioneers and so we don’t have to ‘trial and error’ our way through it, we will be okay because others have been here and they came out okay, if we have Jesus, we are okay because He has seen every possible thing that could be thrown at us and has provided a way for us to emerge victorious. So take heart, this too – pain, suffering, challenges, self-inflicted consequences – shall pass. You aren’t the first or the last. Lean into His path, surrender and you shall live to tell of His goodness in the land of the living. (Psalms 27:13, Psalms 118:17)

On that note, feel free to share (via comment, email, personal message, DMs on social) any prayer request that you might have. Let’s keep, through prayer and supplication, making our requests known to God.

  1. Sure reminder, sharement ni muhimu. Ecclesiastes 1:9
    What has been will be again,
    what has been done will be done again;
    there is nothing new under the sun.
